The following a guest post by Kevin Buchanan of Living Out My Journey
I don’t know about you but I get tired of seeing fakes. You can normally spot them from a mile away. They are so busy trying to be what everyone else tells them to be that they have completely lost who they really are.
I used to be that way. Although I grew up with a sense of who I was, I still occasionally fell into the trap of being what others expected me to be. It took many years for me to consciously start living in the truth of who I was and who God created me to be.
Maybe that was you. Or maybe that IS you. Years of being what others wanted you to be, or told you that you should be have left you looking in the mirror, staring at an unfamiliar face.
Who is the real you?
Who are you meant to be?
What are you meant to offer the world?
Authenticity is the ability to know who you are and to live in its truth. You accept the good and bad in your life and you find the freedom that comes from simply being you.
Your life matters. YOUR life. Not the disguise. Not the mask. Not what others want you to be. You were created with talents, strengths, and quirks that are meant to be there. Live them out! Isn’t it what makes the world a beautiful place anyway? We don’t need a hundred yous and we don’t need a hundred thems and we certainly don’t need a hundred mes! (And yes, that is the plural version of you, them, and me. Calm down grammar police!)
Sometimes we are afraid to be completely ourselves. We get caught up on one aspect of our lives and we feel like it defines everything about us. And in the process of trying to hide it, we lose our authenticity.
Here’s an exercise you can do. Take a blank sheet of paper and begin writing down words that describe you. The good and bad – write it all down. When you’re done, look at the entire page. You are more than just one thing. You are more than one weakness or one strength. There is so much that makes up you as an individual. And if you have trouble, ask a close friend to write words for you.
You be you.
The world is tired of fakes and copycats. The world does not need any more remakes. We’ve been there and done that. It’s time for originality, creativity, and something new!
What does the world need from you?
It needs you to be you. To embrace what makes you unique, to be comfortable in your own skin, and to not try and be anyone else but who you were created to be. To live out the fullest expression of who you are meant to be. This is what the world needs!
I encourage you to write in the comments below what it is that makes up your authentic self! Don’t be afraid – tell us! Let’s celebrate it!
